We Americans are lined up according to who was at the battle first and then rank. Doc Wilburn and I were the first to enter the besieged valley with about 100 Vietnamese irregulars. Although Doc outranked me, he always deferred to my judgement because I was better trained in tactics and had more combat experience. I was always the one on the radio directing the air and artillery strikes while Doc took care of our wounded. You might note that we are a bit better diciplined than at least one of our Vietnamese Special Forces counterparts.
Never realized I gave such a lousy salute until I saw this photo.
